How to complete Form I-9
The legal steps are on USCIS. This is the employer sequence without the 80-page handbook.
Every US employer must complete Form I-9 for each employee hired after 6 November 1986. Do not file it with USCIS. Keep it and produce it if ICE asks.
- Section 1 — employee, on or before the first day of work for pay.
- Section 2 — you examine original List A or List B and C documents within three business days. See Section 2 deadline.
- Store — three years after hire or one year after termination, whichever is later.
- Reverify when work authorization expires (Supplement B). NewHirePack alerts for this are on the roadmap (Q1 2027).
Official instructions:
USCIS I-9. NewHirePack is signed W-4, I-9 Section 1, state withholding, and in-person Section 2 tracking. It is not E-Verify and not remote I-9 under the DHS alternative procedure.
If you want the employee to finish Section 1 on their phone before Day One, that is NewHirePack.
